How are you doing?
For me, it’s a year since I attended my last in-person event, a marketing salon.
Looking back, the year seems to have collapsed on itself. Day blurred into day.
In a city so full of different noises, there was mainly silence.
Looking back, I feel lucky. I didn’t have children or parents to take care of. Also, I already worked from home so my life didn’t change as yours may have.
The number of people who got sick with COVID and who died from the disease has been mind-numbingly big. So BIG that it’s hard to feel, unless you or someone in our home was sick.
Or even worse died. If that’s so, please accept my condolences.
So, I ask again – How are you doing?
A year ago today, we hosted a Marketing Salon in our apartment.
A Marketing Salon is an in-person gathering of senior marketing professionals. Unlike talks or conferences, there is no speaker.
I adopted the name from Gertrude Stein who invited the writers of her time to her apartment in Paris. Her goal, like mine, was to facilitate an exchange of ideas.
I added networking and refreshing adult beverages to the mix. I invited people I knew and some brought other colleagues with them.
My plan was to host a Marketing Salon every other months last year.
But COVID happened. So it was the only Marketing Salon in 2020.
In fact, it was the last live event I attended in the past year.
Until I sat down to write this letter, I forgot how carefully my husband and I cleaned the house. We put things away to reduce the potential for attracting or spreading germs.
Looking back, the Marketing Salon stands out. Maybe because we subconsciously realized that it might be our last live event. Almost 40 marketing colleagues joined. us that night. Some came early and some stayed late to make the event feel longer.
The best part was that people had fun and some realized they had connections in common with people they just met!
A few days after the salon, my husband and I started to shelter-in-place since NYC was an early COVID hotspot.
Last year I considered trying a Zoom version of these Marketing Salons. Since it felt like every element of life was already on Zoom, I didn’t want to add more live video to people’s lives.
Now, I wonder if you feel differently.
Would you like to join a Zoom meeting focused on networking with other marketers?
Or, would you like to join a Zoom interview?
I hope you, your family and friends, and your community stay healthy and safe.
If you qualify for a COVID vaccination, get one. Even if you sleep for a few days like I did, it helps you avoid worse alternatives: serious illness, hospitalization or death. And help your family and friends find appointments for opportunities to get vaccinated.
As always feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or other input that can help our broader community.
